Our faculty and staff truly felt celebrated during Teacher Appreciation Week, thank you once again to our amazing SPGA and the entire Soundview community for recognizing and honoring the dedication of our hardworking educators.

Dear Soundview Families,

Spend your summer at Soundview! We've partnered with Steve & Kate’s Camp to offer a diverse range of camp experiences. Designed to ignite curiosity, foster creativity, and create unforgettable memories, our camps are open to both Soundview School students and the public, so feel free to invite your child’s friends to join the fun! Spots are limited, so be sure to secure yours today HERE.

This week at Soundview School was a joyful celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, filled with caring and thoughtful gestures recognizing our educators. Our staff and faculty enjoyed coffee deliveries, snacks, pizza lunch, thank-you cards, and an ice cream social. A very special thank you to the Soundview Parent and Guardian Association (SPGA) for their hard work and such a meaningful and memorable week for our educators, we appreciate you more than you know!

This week, Mrs. Higgins led the Orchestra on the first stop of their community tour. They played a set across the street at Brighton Court. Mr. MacCully and the 5th grade visited the Gates Foundation to support their Exhibition research. And Soundview hosted the Kamiak Traveling Children’s Show performance of The Monster Who Lost His Mean by Tiffany Strelitz Haber.

Our middle school students are all smiles as they enjoy a fun-filled evening at the Soundview Middle School Spring Fling last Friday!

This week, our students were delighted by a lively and fun-filled performance from the Kamiak High School Children’s Show!

Mrs. Higgins’ orchestra students had the enriching experience of performing for a new audience outside of school, practicing the art of presenting themselves as musicians, maintaining focus through a 20-minute set, and offering their talents in service to others.

Our Grade 5 students had a fantastic experience at the Gates Foundation this week, deepening their research and gaining valuable insights for their upcoming Exhibitions!

Yesterday ParentMap hosted “Let Go and Let Grow: Raising Confident, Independent Children” with Lenore Skenazy, author of “Free-Range Kids.” If you missed the talk or want to watch it again, you can access a full recording of the webinar HERE (access password: GrowingKids).

The 2025-2026 school year class placement process for rising first and third-graders begins next week. Soundview’s goals are to keep students with their teachers for the full two years of their respective pods, as well as create diverse learning communities within classrooms and pods. Current Kindergarten and second-grade families will receive more information via email. Finalized 2025-2026 class lists will be distributed in late June.

Here are the reminders and opportunities during the month of May:

  • Our Soundview Parent and Guardian Association (SPGA) is partnering once again with Clothes for Kids! Each year, Clothes for Kids provides quality clothing for thousands of students where kids and teens can pick out their own clothes with their families. They are especially in need of summer items like hats, shorts, and shirts. You can learn more about their mission HERE

    • There will be collection bins in the front entrance hallway from May 12th - 16th where you can drop off items any time. The clothing drive will also be linked with the donation of the unclaimed lost and found items at the end of the week. The primary collection day is happening with the help of the SPGA volunteers during drop off and pick up on Friday, May 16th, so you don’t even have to get out of your car to participate!

  • Join the Soundview Parent and Guardian Association (SPGA) for their next meeting on Wednesday, May 14th, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center. If you require childcare, please sign up for HERE

  • There is no school for students Monday and Tuesday, May 26th and 27th. Soundview is closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Faculty and staff will be preparing final report cards on Tuesday. School resumes at the usual time on Wednesday, May 28th.

  • Mark your calendars! On Saturday, May 31st, the Soundview community will come together on campus for our annual SPGA Spring Social & New Family Welcome from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Bring your own food & drinks. This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow families, meet future classmates, get to know the amazing people who make up our community, meet members of the SPGA, enjoy our beautiful outdoor space and continue strengthening our vibrant community. Please RSVP by Wednesday, May 28th HERE

Around the world and in different communities, May is a month of recognition and awareness:

  • The International Week of Deaf People, also known as Deaf Awareness Week, is May 5th - 11th. This is an annual global event that aims to shed light on the issues faced by the deaf community, promote their culture and achievements, and foster a more inclusive society. The purpose of this holiday is to increase public awareness about the issues affecting deaf people and deaf culture as a whole. You can learn more about this HERE

  • Thursday, May 15th is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). This is an awareness day focusing on digital access and inclusion for the more than one billion people alive today who live with disabilities or impairments. The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital access and inclusion. It is marked annually on the third Thursday of May. You can learn more about this HERE

Enjoy the sunshine and happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in our community,

One more thing…
On May 9th, 1960, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first oral contraceptive, Enovid, marking a monumental moment in medical and social history. This approval revolutionized reproductive health by giving women, for the first time, a reliable and discreet method of birth control that they could control independently. Beyond its medical implications, the pill became a powerful symbol of women's liberation, significantly impacting gender equality, family planning, and women's participation in the workforce and higher education. The FDA's decision played a crucial role in sparking broader conversations around reproductive rights and continues to be seen as a major milestone in the ongoing fight for bodily autonomy and gender equity.
