Hispanic Heritage Celebration!

Dear Soundview Family,

Today we held a special Hispanic Heritage Celebration for the entire school. We had performances, singing and dancing, and special guests. Students and teachers joined in the festivities.

Fifth-graders were out and about on a field trip to the University of Washington’s Planetarium. You can learn more about the college astronomy program and planetarium by visiting HERE.

We also kicked off admissions season this week for the 2024-2025 school year. Together, we build and strengthen our school community through our school admissions each year. We are giving tours and accepting applications right now. You can help! Talk to your friends. Your school really is one of a kind and everyone should know about it. It only takes a few minutes to look at our website to find out how we can provide an educational experience that is ethical, rigorous, and compassionate. Feel free to reach out to Victoria for any and all questions about admission or to refer a family to Soundview.

Remember, Soundview has an early admissions process for siblings of current students that moves them to the front of the line. The deadline for sibling applications is December 1st, 2023. The deadline for all other applications is February 2nd, 2024.

Student/parent/teacher conferences are Monday, October 30th and Tuesday, October 31st. Electronic sign-up forms will be sent to you via an email from Assistant Head of School Chrissy Sinclair on Monday, October 16th. Your teachers will include a reminder and details in their Toddle announcements on Tuesday, October 17th. As a reminder there is no school for students on Monday and Tuesday during conference times. Childcare will be available for the time(s) during your in-person conference(s) only.

If you are still interested in registering your student for Before / After Care & Clubs we have spots available. You can find the list of clubs and care HERE.

Here are the upcoming important October events and dates:

  • School picture day is Tuesday, October 10th for all students. There will be time for retakes, missed students, and sibling photos on Tuesday, November 7th. Soundview works with Lincoln and Lucy Photography, and you can preview their work HERE.

  • There is no school on Friday, October 13th for an all staff work professional development day. Our faculty and staff have diversity, equity, and inclusion training, and preparation for International Baccalaureate middle years program evaluation. There will be no before/after care or clubs on this day.

  • Soundview Spirit Week is October 23rd through October 27th. Details and daily themes coming soon.

  • BOOLING IS AROUND THE CORNER! This is one of our best community events and all Soundview families are encouraged to join in the fun. Booling is hosted by Soundview Parent/Guardian Association, and they are thrilled to bring this annual Halloween bowling extravaganza to us once again! Join us at Spin Alley on Saturday, October 28th from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM for bowling, costumes, and trunk-or-treating with your Soundview community. Families must RSVP by Thursday, October 19th to attend Booling. Included for each person: bowling, shoe rental, pizza buffet, and fountain drinks. You can read about the details and RSVP HERE.

  • If bowling isn't for you, please still join us just for Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday, October 28th. If you are interested in decorating your car and handing out treats for Trunk-or-Treat this year, sign up details are available HERE

This month also marks many special celebrations for members of our Soundview community:

  • October is Filipino American History Month which celebrates the first Filipino immigrants who arrived in the United States on October 18th, 1587. You can learn more about this historical celebration HERE.

  • October 9th is Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrating the cultures and histories of the Native American people. The day is centered around reflecting on their tribal roots and the tragic stories that hurt but strengthened their communities. You can learn more about this day HERE.

  • October 11th is National Coming Out day for our LGBTQ+ community. On this day, many people who identify as LGBTQ will “come out” to friends or family about their sexuality, which is a very big moment! You can learn more about this day HERE.

  • October is National LGBTQ+ History Month which is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. October was selected to coincide with National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11th), which was already established, and the anniversary of the first march on Washington for gay and lesbian rights in 1979. You can learn more about this celebration HERE.

  • Starting at sundown on September 29th through October 6th is Sukkot, a weeklong Jewish holiday that comes five days after Yom Kippur. Sukkot is named after the booths or huts (sukkot in Hebrew) in which Jews are supposed to dwell during this week-long celebration. You can learn more about this holiday HERE.

Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who allow us the opportunity to work with your children on a daily basis.

Enjoy the sunshine,
Chris

One more thing…
On October 6th, 2007 Jason Lewis completed the self-powered trip to circumnavigate the globe. He was the first person to circumnavigate the globe using only human power – no motors or sails. It was begun by Lewis and Stevie Smith in 1994 and ended at 12:24 pm on October 6th, 2007, when Lewis re-crossed the prime meridian at Greenwich, London, having traveled 74,842 km (46,505 mi). You can read more about this amazing accomplishment HERE
