Welcome Back!

The band and orchestra concert will take place next week!

Dear Soundview Families,

Welcome back from mid-winter break! There are a number of important Soundview events and opportunities coming up this spring:

Come and enjoy Soundview’s bands and orchestra concert on Thursday, March 7th from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center. The concert will include performances by the orchestra, grade level bands, and small and large ensembles.

We’re excited to partner with our Soundview Parent and Guardian Association (SPGA) to extend Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) education to our parent community. Join SPGA and Dr. Heather Clark (University of Washington, Rainier Scholars, and independent school DEI consultant) on March 14, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in Soundview’s Performing Arts Center. The agenda will include defining DEIB terminology and facilitating a conversation with parents. Childcare with limited space is available for a small fee. RSVP HERE.

Save the date: On April 20, 2024, from 5:30 to 9:00 pm, at the Edmonds Waterfront Center, Soundview will come together with our board of trustees and emcee Nelson Jay for the Soundview Spring Benefit. We’ll be building community and raising funds for all programs that demonstrate Soundview’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This event is for everybody. There will be participation levels for all. Tickets will be on sale soon. If you are interested in hosting a table and/or procurement of live auction items, please contact Advancement Manager Ryan Wasserman HERE.

Register for Soundview Summer Camp. Our camp options are for all ages over six week-long sessions. We make our camps available to both Soundview students and to the public, be sure to secure your place now before they fill up. Register HERE

Additionally, there is no school for students on Monday, March 11th for a teacher in-service day. There is also no school for students on Thursday, March 28th and Friday, March 29th for parent/teacher/student-led conferences. There will be drop-in care available for students during the time of your conferences.

Around the world and in different communities, March is a month of recognition and awareness:

March is Women’s History Month, which highlights contributions that women have made in history and in society. It is celebrated every March to correspond with International Women’s Day on March 8th. The first Women’s History Month was celebrated in 1987, and you can read more about this HERE.

Today, March 1st, is Zero Discrimination Day. Zero Discrimination Day calls for the elimination of all discrimination. Its goal is to promote both inclusivity and equality across the world. First initiated by the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS to address the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS, this day encourages all people to take a stand against discrimination. Learn more about this day HERE

Saturday, March 2nd is the Granting of U.S. Citizenship to Puerto Ricans day. On this date in 1917 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Jones-Shafroth Act which granted the people of Puerto Rico U.S. citizenship and the right to elect representatives to the House and Senate. Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, FL where Puerto Ricans today celebrate American Citizenship Day on March 2nd. You can learn more about this HERE

It’s great to be back on campus,
Chris

One more thing…
On March 1, 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first African American woman to earn a medical degree. For much of her career she practiced community medicine in Boston, but in the aftermath of the Civil War she traveled south to treat thousands of formerly enslaved refugees. Crumpler wrote one of the first medical manuals by an African American and/or woman doctor in the United States. You can learn more about this HERE
