Trait of the Month: Principled

Dear Soundview Families,

Big thanks to our fifth-grade students for running today’s assembly! They highlighted the January International Baccalaureate (IB) trait of the month “principled.” Familiarize yourself with the IB traits HERE. You can see photos from this event below.

Our students talked about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his embodiment of the trait principled. Soundview students in all grades were recognized for their actions and demonstrations of Soundview’s values. You can learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr. by visiting HERE.

This was also a fun week of field trips for our students. Yesterday, our third and fourth-graders went to Trinity Lutheran Church to continue their learning unit about cultural symbols and architecture. You can learn about this church by visiting HERE. Next week, they visit a local mosque and synagogue.

Today, our middle school students went on a field trip to Page Ahead where they partnered with elementary schools, early learning centers, and social service agencies across the state to increase access to books and reading for children and families. You can learn more about Page Ahead HERE.

Around the world and in different communities, January is a month of recognition and awareness:

  • Korean American Day on January 13th commemorates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States in 1903. The day also honors the Korean American's immense contributions to every aspect of society. You can learn more about this HERE.

  • MLK Day is a federal holiday in the United States, celebrated every year on the third Monday of January to honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's a day that celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later on January 20, 1986. You can learn more about this HERE

  • The National Day of Racial Healing is a time to contemplate our shared values and create the blueprint together for #HowWeHeal from the effects of racism. Launched in 2017, it is an opportunity to bring ALL people together in their common humanity and inspire collective action to create a more just and equitable world. You can learn more about this HERE

Enjoy the long weekend,
