Curriculum Night Next Week!

Dear Soundview Family,

Congratulations on a successful start to the school year!

Curriculum Night for third through eighth grade families is next Thursday, September 14, from 4:00 to 5:00 PM on campus at Soundview. Parking will be available starting at 3:45 PM. Childcare for students is available. At Curriculum Night, parents will spend the hour with their child’s teacher learning more about the curriculum, assessment, and activities in the class this year. Curriculum Night for early childhood through second grade is the following week on September 21st.

We have a few drop-off and pick-up car line reminders:

  • Do your best to arrive at your designated time. The overlapping times are designed for families with students in multiple grades.

  • If you’re early, please wait around the corner on the residential streets.

  • Pull all the way forward in all three of the loading areas.

  • Stay in your car to ensure the most efficient drop-off or pick-up.

We updated our technology policy this year to include wearable technology. Similar to cell phones or other personal devices, wearable technology should be left at home or turned off and stowed away in backpacks throughout the school day. All communication between students and parents is via the main office school phone at 425-778-8572.

Before and after school care and club registration is available now. Find the information HERE

Soundview spiritwear is going live next week! Check Toddle on Tuesday for the link to the store. The online store will only be open for a limited time through the end of the month. Reach out to Victoria (vnunes@soundview.org) if cost is prohibitive. We want all of our Soundview kids to be able to get something.

This year we launch a new strategic plan to run from 2023 through 2027. We have two areas of priority:

  1. Deepening Soundview’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusivity, and belonging (DEIB).

  2. Defining Soundview’s future growth, including plans for Soundview’s campus.

We’ll be communicating about these priorities regularly in this letter, in addition to other upcoming opportunities to engage with Soundview’s strategic plan.

Here are highlights from Soundview’s faculty and staff DEIB work this August:

  • Our DEIB Coordinator and School Counselor Travis Wood led our faculty through a work session on developing an early childhood through eighth grade DEIB scope and sequence of skills based on the International Baccalaureate traits. Learn more about the traits HERE.

  • We began the planning and implementation of an internationally focused social, emotional, and ethical (SEE Learning) curriculum based out of Emory University. Learn more about SEE Learning HERE.

  • During faculty library training, we reviewed the process and resources for evaluating texts. A great example of a resource we use is: How to Tell the Difference: A Guide to Evaluating Children’s Books for Anti-Indian Bias by Beverly Slapin, Doris Seale, and Rosemary Gonzales. Do make time to visit the Soundview library. We curate a diverse and relevant collection. This month’s displays are books that celebrate LatinX Heritage month.

  • We held Soundview’s “All School Review.” The All School Review ensures that all students and families are seen and known by every Soundview faculty and staff member. In the All School Review, we take time to talk about the strengths and areas of growth for each and every student. We complete a second All School Review halfway through the school year.

Enjoy your weekend,

Chris

Chris Watson, Soundview Head of School

One more thing…

In 2016 – NASA launches OSIRIS-REx, its first asteroid sample return mission. The probe will visit 101955 Bennu and is expected to return with samples in 2023.
