Chili Cook-Off and Game Night!

Dear Soundview Families,

This was a great week for our students. Yesterday, our third and fourth-graders went to Masjid Umar Al-Farooq Muslim Association of Northwest to continue their unit about cultural symbols and architecture. They learned about Islamic education and social services. You can learn about this association HERE

Today, middle years students went to Page Ahead, an organization that partners with elementary schools, early learning centers, and social service agencies across the state to increase access to books and literacy for children and families. You can learn more about Page Ahead HERE.

Thursday was the second orchestra recital of the year, featuring the 7th Grade Band. The recital was an opportunity to share the band’s progress, as well as performances by the orchestra and advanced trio. You can see a video from this performance HERE

Around the world and in different communities, January is a month of recognition and awareness:

Sunday, January 21st is World Religion Day. This is a day dedicated to acknowledging and respecting the various religious traditions and beliefs practiced around the world. Thursday, January 25th is the Mahayana New Year. The Mahayana New Year, also known as “Vesak,” is a traditional Buddhist holiday that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. One more thing…
On January 19th, 1952, Professional Golfers Association (PGA) president Horton Smith announced that a seven-man committee “almost unanimously” voted to allow Black golfers to compete in PGA co-sponsored events. With the announcement, Smith hoped that Black golfers would participate in the next two major events, the Phoenix Open and Tucson Open. You can learn more about this HERE
