Recognizing Our Diverse Community!
Universal Human Rights Month is observed every December to commemorate the adoption of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on December 10, 1948, serving as a global call to action to promote and protect fundamental freedoms and dignity for everyone, focusing on education, advocacy, and ensuring basic rights like safety, health, and equality are upheld daily. It's a time for reflection, raising awareness, and taking action against discrimination and persecution, leading up to and including Human Rights Day (December 10th). Read more HERE.
Hanukkah begins at sundown on Sunday, December 14th. This is a joyful, eight-day celebration that honors themes of light, resilience, and togetherness. Families mark the occasion by lighting candles each night, enjoying traditional foods like latkes and donuts, sharing stories, exchanging small gifts, and spending meaningful time with loved ones. It’s a festive season filled with warmth, community, and reminders of hope during the darkest days of winter. Learn more about this HERE.
HIV/AIDS Awareness Month is observed in December, focusing globally on World AIDS Day on December 1st, to raise awareness, fight stigma, and remember those lost to AIDS, emphasizing prevention (condoms, PrEP), testing, and treatment (ART), with the red ribbon as its symbol of support and solidarity. It's a time to promote understanding that HIV is manageable, with people on effective treatment having near-normal life expectancies, and to encourage regular testing, especially for those at risk.
