Recognizing Our Diverse Community
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), was celebrated on May 17th. This is a global day to raise awareness and combat discrimination and violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals. It commemorates the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to remove homosexuality from iHERE.ts list of mental disorders. Learn more about this HERE.
Monday, May 26th is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it has been observed on the last Monday of May. You can learn more about this HERE.
May is Lupus Awareness Month in the United States, and has been since 1979. Lupus can cause inflammation and pain in any part of your body. It’s an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system — the body system that usually fights infections — attacks healthy tissue instead. The month is dedicated to raising awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide. You can learn more about this HERE.
May is Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Awareness Month. (CF) is a genetic disease that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other parts of the body. The thick mucus can clog organs and cause damage or infections. The month is a time for the CF community to share personal stories, learn about the disease, and unite behind the mission of finding a cure for all people with CF. You can learn more about this HERE.
