At Soundview, we believe a child’s first impressions must be remembered happily. Our early childhood program embraces the sparkling creativity of this “golden age with hands-on activities that nurture the excitement of discovery. Developing physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills through a wide assortment of games, colorful projects and group exercises, Soundview’s students build strong, supportive bonds in a fun, engaging environment.

Preschool to Junior Kindergarten

With faces and inquisitive hands, our three to four-year-olds rapidly absorb the sights and sounds of Soundview’s child-centered classroom. Rotating through various learning centers, they gain solid introductions to phonics, printing, Spanish and math with a low instructor-student ratio. Music, art and drama exercises fill the days with fun while preparing them for their academic journey in the years ahead.

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten, Soundview students noticeably start to come into their own. Achieving at a level far above their peers, these eager five- and six-year-olds create stories, apply math and test scientific theories while becoming fluent readers. Arts (including visual arts, drama, and music) and the outside world take their place as primary components of the Soundview curriculum through field trips, an introduction to art history, class performances and community service. Small, individually attentive classes with a low teacher-student ratio encourage self-confidence, emotional growth and reinforce values like sharing and a positive worldview. Taught with a changing variety of individual and group exercises, this year sets a comprehensive foundation for a curiosity-driven education.

Academic program

Our young children learn phonics, printing of letters, hands-on mathematics and science, foreign language, art, and music. The classroom has several centers such as language arts, math, science, and dramatic centers. The children rotate through each center a few times a day. An individualized reading program helps each child to master reading at their own level. At the end of kindergarten class we have several fluent readers who are reading chapter books.

Language Arts

Our goal is to develop lifelong readers and writers early in a child’s life. When children develop competence in the fundamentals of reading and writing, their motivation to achieve increases.

Listening and Speaking

Children learn to listen and respond to oral communication. Children also learn to share information and ideas, speaking audibly in complete sentences.

Mathematics

The Soundview math curriculum emphasizes concepts in numbers and numeration, patterning, sequencing, geometry, and measurement. Children learn mathematical concepts using models and concrete objects to connect their learning with things from the physical world and the immediate environment. Children learn addition and subtraction using number games.

Science

Science activities help children understand the wonder of the natural and physical world. Children study concepts of life, physical, and earth sciences through hands-on experiments. They are encouraged to hypothesize, analyze, and compare.
