Academics grant you knowledge, but the arts allow expression.
An essential part of understanding the world both past and present, Soundview offers an unparalleled program to develop keen eyes, finely-tuned ears and love of well-penned cadence. From ancient Greece to the present day, societies have used the arts to help children think critically, develop higher communication skills and simply have fun.
Visual Art Aims
Art class in Soundview intends to inspire 1. a new avenue in seeing, 2. problem solving and 3. visual communication skills. Through hands-on projects, students learn by doing. The aims are arranged in four strands, creative process, elements of art and design, visual arts in society and reflection and appreciation. Art lessons integrate with core subjects, and use PYP transdisciplinary themes to organize the unit of study. Our projects are design for students to explore various art mediums and discover wide ranges of art techniques. Visual art education aims to encourage innovation, creativity and self expression.
Learning Goals
Students will complete series of art exercises that design to strengthen their fundamental understanding in elements and principles of art. Students will learn to draw from observation, learn basic blending techniques using color pencil, oil pastel, express their ways of seeing with watercolor and acrylic. They will also explore mono print, make collage art, and 3-D sculptures. Emphasis in the area of studio related skill will be placed on becoming more familiar with the different stages of creative process, use a sketchbook as a means of reflective tool to record idea or observation, and begin to discover the interrelationship between the elements of art and principles of design. Furthermore, students will develop awareness and appreciate that there are multiple perspectives in how artworks are made, viewed and valued.
Classroom Safety and Assessment Guidelines
Art making is fun, but it can be messy. Some studio materials may be permanent if stain on the clothes. We encourage students to wear a smock in the art class. Hand washing is required before leaving art class. Never use teacher only equipments.
Art classes are designed to meet individual needs of the students with wide range of ability levels. The teacher will evaluate work with an understanding to allow for variations in students art backgrounds and experience. The evaluation will be an ongoing process.
