Positive Discipline & Singapore Math Mini-Workshop Print

Soundview is holding a “mini-workshop” to introduce two of our powerful curriculums to parents so they can better understand how they work in and out of school! This workshop is open to everyone - current, prospective and newly enrolled parents! Come learn about how Singapore Math and Positive Discipline will shape a solid foundation for your child’s future!

The workshop will be held on March 25 from 5:00-6:10pm, with the last 20 minutes reserved for questions and conversations. Childcare is available at no extra charge (for children 3 and up). Light snacks will be provided and this is an event for parents and other adults in the student’s lives. 0076.JPGPositive Disipline
Tim Cole and his Positive Dicipline committee will help introduce how this program works at Soundview and how it is promoting responsible citizenship and developing emotional intelligence. Topics include:

• How you can be positive and firm at the same time
• Why, as adults, we don’t just tell the students the right thing to do
• What happens in class meetings and why they are so valuable
• Ways to support teachers in their Positive Discipline methods at home

Singapore Math
Robbee Tonubbee, Soundview School’s Math Curriculum leader presents how Singapore Math content differs greatly from the typical US curriculum and accompanying textbooks. It focuses more on a deeper understanding of concepts that leads students to become better critical thinkers and problem solvers. At Soundview the math curriculum is not just about the Singapore Math textbooks but is a comprehensive program that teaches students in a variety of methods, some that will be familiar to students coming from traditional programs, designed to build competent and confident learners. Ms. Tonubbee will introduce what students learn from kindergarten up, including the “bar model” approach for problem solving. The “bar model” is the most unique part of the program and allows students as early as second grade to use algebraic skills in problem solving methods. This problem solving approach is often more difficult for parents than for the students so any extra time parents can spend learning about this unique program benefits all involved.
