I Can Speak & Write Chinese! - Mondays

Are you interested in Chinese culture? Have you ever imagined being able to speak Mandarin Chinese, and to write Chinese Calligraphy? This class is the continuation of I Can Speak Chinese. This class is designed for intermediate Chinese speaking and beginning Chinese character writing. Through games, songs, story, art, and role play, students will learn to speak practical everyday conversational Chinese. Learn to write common Chinese characters, and learn the fundamentals of listening, reading, and writing a form of Chinese phonics called Pin-Yin. Themes include hobby, friend, direction, time, traveling and holidays. This is a mixed-level class. New students must have basic understanding in Mandarin Chinese Pin-Yin. Returning students will learn to speak Mandarin more independently, practice sentence structure in the form of questions and write Chinese characters. Mandarin Chinese is the world’s most spoken language. It is never too late to learn a new language, so start today!
Teacher Bio: Li-ting Hung has several years of teaching experience in Chinese and is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker. She has also been a Chinese-English translator at the Victoria Academy, TW.
Doll Making - Mondays

Using items that are normally tossed away or recycled, participants will assemble a doll and choose clothing, hair, and accessories. Check out the sample doll in the front office!
Teacher Bio: Ms. Arlene Phillips is our co-third grade teacher and primary years homework club supervisor. She has also assisted with Soundview Summer Camps. Ms. Phillips enjoys tutoring students, playing games, doing puzzles, sewing and crafts, cooking, entertaining, square dancing and playing with her active and intelligent border collie. She enjoys working with all of the students at Soundview.
Ultimate Frisbee (4th-5th and 6th-8th) - Tuesdays & Thursdays

Enjoy the great outdoors while playing Ultimate Frisbee on the Soundview playfield. Play exciting games that include copious amounts of movement. Participate in league meets with other Ultimate teams!
Teacher Bio: Tim Cole is Soundview's Athletic Director, PE Teacher, and Summer Programs Director. He is very active with our students, constantly teaching them new athletic skills in and outside of class. During the summer Mr. Cole heads our summer programs, creating a fun environment for students where they can both play and learn.
iPad2 Animation - Tuesdays

Have you ever watched cartoons on T.V. and wished you could make your own? In this class students will make original cartoons on an iPad 2, using the animation program “DoInk”. Continuing animation students have the option of learning from intermediate and advanced animation lessons. CONTINUING ANIMATION STUDENTS HAVE THE OPTION OF LEARNING FROM INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED ANIMATION LESSONS. After adding music (on Garage Band), and editing their final product on including voice-overs (on iMovie) all using the iPad 2, their finished products will then be placed on the website www.cancancancan.com (4 cans). Presently there are over 800 movies on the website in addition to class commercials. Skills taught can include basic language arts, drama, 2 and 3 dimensional drawing, physics, and math.

Take ordinary items, use your hands and simple tools, and create a collection of items such as lamps, race cars, and keyholders.
Teacher Bio: Mr. Bill Good is Soundview's Facilities Manager, who loves the opportunities he gets to work with children. This trimester he will be teaching the harmonica. Look for his Construction Club in the winter and Classics Club in the fall!
Mrs. Chrissy Sinclair teaches 1st grade at Soundview. She is also the Admissions Committee Coordinator. She has led a rock-climbing club, coached field hockey and lacrosse, and enjoys sailing, traveling, rock climbing, hockey, reading and several other outdoor activities.

Teacher Bio: Dr. Castro’s education formally started at the Manhattan School of Music (Bachelor of Music), Yale University School of Music (Master of Music) and at the University of Washington (Doctor of Musical Arts) in trumpet performance. In addition to teaching, Dr. Castro has an active professional life as a performer and frequently plays with local orchestras and ensembles. He also regularly arranges music for the groups with which he plays. Dr. Castro has been a trumpet and brass instrumental coach for bands and orchestral ensembles for several Puget Sound area schools and organizations.

If you want to learn to program a software application, use sensors and motors to create toys and machines, or share ideas on your existing projects, come to our club! It is held is the computer lab. We use a variety of tools including Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu), a kid-friendly free tool, to develop games and stories. Get a kick-start on learning something new and join other Soundview kids in sharing ideas and building your next big project!
Teacher Bio: Alan Piercy is a software engineer who teaches computer programming at Soundview. He is also Soundview's Technology Director.
Chess Club - Thursdays

This class is recommended for intermediate or advanced chess players. We will have chess lessons, chess quizzes, chess games and chess puzzles for Soundview kids. They will primarily play chess against each other, but also occasionally against the computer, and against the teacher.
Teacher Bios: Ms. Nicole Milton works works for Chess Academy under Elena Donaldson, who is a Three Time US Women’s Champion. Nicole has been teaching students of all levels at the Chess Academy for two years. She has been playing chess since she was in middle school and has competed in several state and national events. Nicole will be using and following Chess Academy curriculum to teach the students in our chess club of all levels. She played chess professionally for 13 years, 1977-1989. In 1986, Elena played a match for the World Championship Title, amongst her other achievements: two time World Chess Women’s Olympics Champion, three time Russia Women’s Chess Champion, and winner of many International Women’s Chess Tournaments. A Sunday column “Chess Studio with Elena Donaldson” is published weekly by Seattle Times since 1995.
Percussion Ensemble - Thursdays

In addition to building musical skills on drums, cymbals, and keyboard percussion instruments, students in this class will learn the terminology and appropirate techniques for dozens of instruments in the vast group known as "accessory percussion." This ensemble will contribute the percussion parts for the Soundview Bands and Soundview Community Youth Orchestra, as well as develop unique and exciting pieces written specifically for percussion ensemble performance. This course is designed to allow brass, woodwind, and string students an opportunity to also develop performance skills on percussion instruments.
Teacher Bio: Mrs. Higgins did her undergraduate work in Music Education at Northern Arizona University, and her graduate studies in Instrumental Conducting at Long Beach State University. Her student ensembles have consistently earned the highest ratings in small ensemble festivals, including several middle school percussion ensembles.

Quiz Bowl - Fridays

The Quiz Bowl team consists of middle school students who compete in academic tournaments with other groups from around the area. Quiz Bowl is an academic competition that tests knowledge of history, art, literature, languages, mathematics, hard science, music, and other fields of study. If you enjoy Jeopardy or playing Trivial Pursuit, you would probably enjoy playing on the team.
Teacher Bio: Ms. Tonubbee grew up in a small town in Southeastern Oklahoma. She attended Bryn Mawr College and received a B.A. in Mathematics before going on to Southeastern Oklahoma State University to obtain a M.Ed in Secondary Mathematics. After six years teaching middle and high school math in Oklahoma – and serving as a foster parent to more than fifteen children – she decided to explore education outside the U.S., moving to the Bahamas to teach at a private school. Her love for Math has led her to tutor students in all Math subjects as well as the ACT, SAT, SSAT, and the BJCE (Bahamas Junior Certification Exams). She is delighted to be back in the States and in the Pacific Northwest.
Beginning Strings - Fridays

The Beginning Strings class provides the opportunity to learn the basic skills for playing the violin or the cello. Our lessons will focus on the individual needs of each student for learning good sound production, note reading facility and equipment care. Beginning Strings students have fun making music while learning from an encouraging and patient instructor.
Once a strong foundation of basic skills is developed (as determined by the instructor), students may advance to the Soundview Community Youth Orchestra where a move to viola or bass is an option.

The Soundview Community Youth Orchestra is the place to build skills and create musical art on violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Our rehearsals develop playing technique, teach ensemble music making, and challenge the students with practice in sight reading, as well as prepare pieces for performances several times per school year. Orchestra students have fun making music while learning from an encouraging and patient instructor.
Minimum of one year experience studying a string instrument required. Beginning students, please consider the new "Beginning Strings" class.
