2011-12 Chess Mini-Class

January 30th to April 16th, 2012

Soundview is very excited to bring back a fabulous opportunity for our Jr. K and Kindergarten students to be exposed to the early learning chess program. Studies have proven that playing chess, especially at a young age, improves academic grades and development of children. There is a clear correlation between kids playing chess in early grades and good grades in math. Our mission is to teach kids important academic skills using the chess game as a tool.

The Chess Mini-Class will use curriculum developed by three time US Women’s Chess Champion Elena Donaldson. She applies over ten years of experience of successfully teaching students four years-old and up. Students will use special workbooks designed for young beginners. Grand Master Elena Donaldson will be teaching along with her assistant, Nicholas.

In the Chess Mini-Class students will:

  • Learn the basics of chess
  • Learn and review basics of math and geometry by learning about the chess board and moves
  • Learn and review how to count, add and deduct, write chess notation, and record chess moves
  • Learn rules of sportsmanship
  • Play practice and competitive games

2011-12 Claymation Film Festival

We enjoyed the culmination of the work of our 4th and 5th grade students at our second annual Claymation Film Festival! The students worked in teams to compose stories, construct sets and characters out of clay, operate a digital camera, and add sound. Throughout this project, the students learned basic principles in physics, math, language arts, fine art, and music. It took 21 students 11 weeks to create and animate their stories with over 4000 photographs.
